Fiber Optic Outside Plant (OSP) Training

CFOS/O - Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Outside Plant - is the FOA certification for technicians specializing in fiber optic installation within outside plant (OSP) environments. This certification enhances the foundational knowledge acquired in the CFOT program by incorporating specific skills related to OSP construction and the installation of both aerial and underground fiber optic cable plants. Key competencies include the proper installation and cable preparation of OSP cables, as well as techniques such as fusion splicing for concatenation and termination, with an emphasis on testing methodologies using OTDRs.
The fiber optic training program encompasses at least the following topics:
- Overview of OSP fiber optic installations
- Communications systems utilizing OSP fiber optic cable plant
- Fiber optic components suitable for OSP networks
- Construction techniques for OSP installations
- Installation methodologies for buried, underground, and aerial cable
- Splicing and testing of cables, including the use of splice closures, OLTS, and OTDR testing
- Restoration practices
- Lab exercises that provide hands-on experience in splicing and testing on simulated outside plant environments.
